When a Leader Learned to Have a Heart

It’s already January 4 and this will be my first post for the year 2013. I’ve been busy for planning 2013 for last three days for great changes and I also had glimpses of my 2012. I have realized that I have not set any goals for last year, however, I keep moving. I have lots of activities done – with my team or individually, many new people met, and I can say I have achieved some things that are rewarding because of my hard work. For now, I have set goals that make my butt ignite from where I was sitting by now but I want to keep it from myself. So, what I will share is to enumerate the things I have learned from my obstacles this 2012.

What I’ve Learned
1. To be a leader is fulfilling and as for me, to be a leader is not having a heart of stone.  What is more fulfilling is when people follow me not because they HAVE to, but because they WANT  to. To command and to discipline people is a balance of heart and mind.

2. A group is being kept when I befriended them, when they are happy, and when I treat them right. It is harmonious to do business when I make friends with my people. (I never wanted to be the serious, strict, and militaristic type like the bosses I used to watch from movies)

3. Learn how to mingle with other people, not just my own circle all the time, because by mingling with others, I learn from them. I had some idea that my circle may not know, that in return, I share it with my circle.

Leaders should have a heart.
4. When aiming for something, it is not bad to pause for a while and breathe. Having a pressure is okay, but exhaustion will break what I was aiming. Enjoy the beauty of life ONCE in a while, so I learned to have a break by simply going to mall, watching a movie, or drinking a cup of coffee with friends.

5. Being a leader does not mean my idea is the only right. People mostly take interests when it is about THEM so let them be heard. Allow them to speak, and when they have told something brilliant, I am impressed because that is from my team.  Apparently, great minds think alike. Lol.

6. “It is better to give than to receive.” I have read and heard this several times but I can’t sense any favor from me before until I experienced it this 2012. Whether that could be tangible or intangible, as long as you give, without expecting anything in return, I received lots of things, small or big, that makes me happy.

I can say that my 2012 made me to learn a lot from WITHIN. Things that is morally right. Since birth, I thought that best decisions came from the mind but as I get older, there are things that should be put into consideration especially when the decisions made affect other people. Maybe, I was afraid to show something good because people will expect me to be good. All the time.

Maybe, I have not set any goals for 2012 because God set a goal for me to change… so for 2013, goals that I have set will come into life. Remember, best things are always from the inside.

“Bago muna magbago buhay mo, kailangan mo munang baguhin sarili mo.”

  2. Through the years, even if it's the start of a new year, I have always welcomed changes not only from within but also outside. And for this year, I don't know what to change anymore--at least for now. I'm fond of making lists like yours. This time I ask for His help to show me the new set of goals and lessons I have to attain. More power to you. :-D

  4. We do need more leaders who can set the example and people would emulate. Of course, the key to being a good one is having a deeper understanding of our strengths, weaknesses, goals and motivations.

  5. I agree with you. Like the saying goes, "To be a leader, you must be a follower first." You have to listen to your members, cooperate with them, earn their respect and be a model. :)

  6. Great inputs for leaders and mentors alike. I like #4 to have fun and enjoy life. A leader must not be too occupied for it. Great post!

  7. Nice post :) I enjoy leadership posts because I like learning new or different ways of leading. My personal style is serious and strict, and I'm not ashamed of it because as much as possible, I lead via example. It works (so far) :)

  10. I agree, being a leader doesn't mean we can boast to people. In this position we have to be humble enough to set an example.

  12. We plan how our lives should look like, but God knows better. Whatever we encounter, included in our plans or not, remember everything happens for a reason. Enjoy life :)

I know how hard it is to be a leader, especially when people tend to just let the leader do everything. You must have a strong mind and heart to take on the challenges. We must not forget being human while we hold power.

  15. When I was given the chance to lead an organization, I tried to lead by action. I did not put myself above rules. When there was something that needs to be done, I was always there with them including manual work. In order to be a good leader, one must know how to be a good follower. It was quite effective in our situation because we accomplished more without being too conscious of positions.

  16. When I had the chance to lead an organization, I tried to lead by action by working with the members in all aspects including manual work. One has to be a good follower first before one can truly become a good leader.

  17. “Bago muna magbago buhay mo, kailangan mo munang baguhin sarili mo.” I agree. We have to be the change we want to see in this world. I started listening again to Eckhart Tolle about the Power of Now. You might want to add that in your list of things to consider helping you achieve your goals. :)

  19. Thanks for sharing the lessons you've learned last year. I can see that you're a good leader because you set as good example. A good leader always know when it is time to change shape because they are considerate of other people's feelings and value other people's opinions...just like you. :)

  20. A good leader is one who can tell another how to reach his or her potential; a great leader is one who can help another discover this potential for him or herself.
