What is Visita Iglesia?

Visita Iglesia in Spanish is Visit of the Churches. It has been the tradition of the Roman Catholic during  during Maundy Thursday  by visiting seven churches to reflect and meditate on the church because it has significance on the following:

1. seven scripture passages of Christ's arrest and trial
2. seven last words of Christ

  • "Father, forgive them, for they do no know what they do." Luke 23:24
  • "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise." Luke 23:43
  • Jesus said to his mother, "Woman, this is your son." Then he said to the disciple, "This is your mother." John 19:26-27
  • "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Matthew 27:46
  • "I thirst." John 19:28
  • When Jesus had received the wine, he said, "It is finished;" and he bowed his head and handed over the spirit. John 19:30
  • Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit." Luke 23:46

3. seven wounds of Christ
4. first seven christian holy sites in Israel
5. seven deacons of the twelve apostles
6. seven ancient basilicas of Rome

Every Good Friday, the tradition is to recite and pray the Station of the Cross on a church. With that in mind, the Visita Iglesia and the Station of the Cross is combined into one - visiting seven churches and praying two of the fourteen Station of the Cross in every church.
