After eating at Aveneto with my high school friends, we had decided to watch a movie since the time was only 10 PM - too early for nocturnal creatures like us. We also got to spend more time with one of our friends for she will be leaving to Australia for career wise. I am done watching G.I. Joe while some of them were not fond of watching locals so we decided to watch the Host, a movie adopted from Stephanie Meyer's novel of the same name. This science fiction and romantic movie is all about the earth invaded by aliens called Souls. These aliens are kind but they perceived that humans are just too violent to deserve a good planet, Earth. With that, they incorporate the Souls into human's body (the host) making the consciousness of human be absent and the only thing left is the memory. An alien's mark is when there's white color in the iris, around pupil.
The leading character
Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan), a human, scavenged food with her younger brother, Jamie, and her boyfriend, Jared, but was caught by an alien named Seeker and Melanie's body was incorporated by a Soul named Wanderer. Wanderer is happy to have Melanie's body but the struggle began when Melanie's consciousness is there, dictating her what she had to do to save the remaining human race. Melanie fought with Wanderer through her mind but Wanderer fought through her actions. Since the alien is kind, Wanderer became open with Melanie's thoughts because of his younger brother where she promised she would come back. Wanderer and Melanie decided to go in a desert where his uncle owned a very huge cave where human lives secretly to escape from Soul incorporation to their body. Uncle Jeb saw Wanderer and gave her water and Wanderer met Jared but did not welcomed her because he knew she is one of them because of the eyes. As she lived with humans, she learned to appreciate the people on Melanie's life and later has fallen in love with Ian, one of the survivors. How will love take place when Melanie is in love with Jared but Wanderer is in love with Ian, when owning same body?
If you are a fan of Meyer's novel, I must say that you must watch to catch up the differences of the movie and the book but in my opinion, there is nothing really special with the story. My best friend told us that there is something in Meyer's novel that had a pattern. She mentioned that Meyer made bad people be good and I say that she is fond of writing novels between the struggle of mind and heart, and about being human. I know that most of our movies today are blend with love stories but what is good thing about Meyer's novels are the passion of love, and in this movie, it is greatly shown that makes her novels be patronized by girls than guys.
"Eight full lives and I never found anyone I would stay on a planet for, anyone I would follow when they left. I never found a partner. Why now? Why you? You're not part of my species. How can you be my partner?"
"It's a strange universe."
"Her name is Wanderer, not it."
